Forex market update covering USD, EUR and GBP movements, central bank outlooks and the key economic data driving currency markets today.
Key Insights
Dollar strength remains the dominant theme
The US dollar extended its recent gains after stronger than expected business activity data reinforced confidence in the resilience of the US economy. This supports the Federal Reserve's cautious approach to interest rate cuts and continues to attract demand for the dollar.
Euro under increasing pressure
The euro has fallen to its weakest level in a year as economic data from Germany and France continues to disappoint. With the European Central Bank signalling a more cautious stance on future policy tightening, downside risks remain if key support levels fail to hold.
Pound struggles to find momentum
UK economic activity has contracted for a second consecutive month, limiting support for sterling. While political uncertainty has eased, the pound remains vulnerable against a dollar that is benefiting from stronger economic fundamentals.
Market Recap
The US dollar climbed to its highest level in three months after business surveys showed activity accelerating to a five month high, while manufacturing reached its strongest reading since 2022. This reinforced expectations that US interest rates may remain elevated for longer.
The euro weakened further following disappointing economic releases from Germany and France. Comments from ECB President Christine Lagarde also suggested a more measured approach to future policy decisions, adding to downward pressure on the single currency.
Sterling moved lower after UK business activity data pointed to a second month of economic contraction, with the services sector recording its weakest performance in over a year.
Broader market sentiment turned defensive, with a sell off in technology stocks weighing on growth sensitive currencies such as the Australian dollar and Norwegian krone. The Japanese yen outperformed amid renewed speculation around potential intervention from Japanese authorities.
Market Overview
Attention today turns to Germany's IFO Business Climate survey, a key measure of business confidence. A stronger than expected reading could provide temporary support for the euro, although expectations remain subdued following yesterday's weak economic data. Another disappointing result would likely reinforce concerns about the outlook for the Eurozone economy.
EURUSD
The outlook remains tilted to the downside. Diverging central bank expectations continue to favour the dollar, with the Federal Reserve maintaining a firmer policy stance while the ECB appears increasingly cautious. Should current support levels give way, the euro could face another meaningful leg lower. Businesses with euro exposure may wish to review whether current levels present an opportunity to manage future currency risk.
GBPUSD
Sterling remains under pressure as softer UK economic data contrasts with continued US resilience. Unless upcoming US data disappoints or the new UK government delivers a strong growth focused fiscal agenda, the balance of risks continues to favour the dollar. Companies with future dollar requirements may want to consider whether recent market moves warrant action.
GBPEUR
Despite broader weakness in sterling, the pound has held relatively steady against the euro. Structural challenges facing the Eurozone and the ECB's more cautious approach have offset many of the factors weighing on the pound. While the pair has repeatedly struggled to break higher over the past year, sterling continues to find support from the euro's own difficulties.
Other Currency Moves
Risk aversion across markets created notable moves in several secondary currencies. The Australian dollar, Norwegian krone and Swedish krona all weakened, making them cheaper to purchase in sterling terms compared with the previous session. Businesses with exposure to these currencies should remain alert to ongoing volatility as market sentiment continues to drive price action.
