Sterling remains firm, markets await the latest US inflation report, and the ECB prepares for a potential rate hike. Discover how central bank decisions and Middle East tensions are shaping currency markets.
Key Highlight
- Pound Sterling Holds Ground: Sterling remained well supported, helped by stronger than expected UK retail sales figures which continue to suggest resilience in consumer spending.
- European Central Bank Under the Spotlight: Markets are focused on the ECB policy decision due tomorrow, with investors widely expecting a 0.25% increase in interest rates.
- US Inflation Data Takes Centre Stage: Attention turns to today's US inflation release. Forecasts point to a further rise in headline inflation, which could influence expectations for future Federal Reserve policy and drive movement across currency markets.
Market Recap
The US dollar eased from recent highs as investors reduced positions ahead of today's closely watched inflation report. Expectations are for annual inflation to rise to 4.2%, representing the highest reading since April 2023.
Sterling continued to perform well following encouraging UK retail sales data, while the euro traded steadily as markets awaited the ECB's latest policy announcement.
The Canadian dollar remained under pressure, allowing USD/CAD to reach fresh yearly highs ahead of the Bank of Canada's interest rate decision. Policymakers are expected to leave rates unchanged at 2.25%.
Market Overview
Geopolitical tensions returned to the forefront after reports of a US helicopter being brought down and subsequent warnings of retaliation from President Trump. Overnight developments saw the United States launch military strikes in Iran, with Iran responding by targeting US military bases in the Gulf region.
Although these developments triggered sharp declines in equity markets initially, foreign exchange markets reacted with greater restraint. Currency traders appeared reluctant to take significant new positions amid a busy schedule of upcoming central bank meetings in Europe, the United States and the United Kingdom.
For now, markets remain caught between geopolitical uncertainty and major economic events. The outcome of today's US inflation data, along with forthcoming central bank decisions, is likely to provide the next significant direction for currency markets.
