US Jobs Report in Focus: Dollar Pauses Ahead of Key Payrolls Data

Wednesday, February 11, 2026

Markets are on alert as the US Jobs Report takes centre stage. With Non-Farm Payrolls, wage growth and unemployment data due, volatility in USD pairs could accelerate quickly. Expectations for a softer print are keeping the dollar subdued but any surprise could reset Fed rate expectations in an instant.

Key Highlight

  • Markets positioned cautiously ahead of potentially weak job numbers
  • The pound’s recent recovery appears to be running out of steam

Market Recap

The US dollar extended its pullback for a third consecutive session after weaker-than-expected December retail sales data dented confidence in US economic momentum. The USD Spot Index edged lower on the day and has now lost over 1% across the past three sessions.

US Treasury yields also declined across the curve, reflecting softer growth expectations and a shift in rate outlook.

USD/JPY dropped sharply, falling close to 1% to the mid-154 level and extending losses over the past two days. The move followed confirmation from Japan’s Finance Minister that the government will not prolong the temporary food sales tax cut — a signal that fiscal policy support may not be expanded.

Meanwhile, sterling’s recent political-driven rebound lost momentum as markets pause ahead of upcoming UK GDP data later this week.

Market Overview:

Attention remains firmly on the US dollar as markets position ahead of Wednesday’s key payrolls release. Today’s ADP employment figures will be closely watched for clues on labour market momentum, while December retail sales are also due. Expectations point to modest growth, but any downside surprise in consumer spending would strengthen concerns that US economic activity is losing pace.

In the UK, recent displays of cabinet unity have helped steady sentiment and reduce immediate political uncertainty, offering the pound some short-term support. That said, GBP remains sensitive to ongoing political developments, with upcoming UK GDP data later this week likely to be a key driver.

What this means for markets:

Near-term FX moves are likely to be driven by US data outcomes, particularly employment and consumer demand, while sterling’s outlook will depend on whether improved political stability is reinforced by stronger domestic growth figures.
