Why USD Moves Matter This Week: Fed, Data and Market Sentiment

Tuesday, January 27, 2026

Market attention is firmly on the US dollar this week, with key data releases, major earnings and the Fed decision set to drive FX volatility.

Key Highlight

  • The US dollar remains under mounting strain

Market Recap

The US dollar continued to weaken, marking its third consecutive decline as renewed trade concerns, domestic political uncertainty, and growing speculation around coordinated FX intervention pressured the currency.

The Japanese yen outperformed its G10 peers after officials signalled a willingness to step in if currency moves become disorderly, triggering a sharp pullback in USD/JPY.

Elsewhere, the euro and sterling built on recent strength, while the Canadian dollar and Swiss franc also advanced. Notably, USD/CHF slipped to new multi-year lows, underscoring the broader softening in the dollar.

What this means:

With multiple risk factors converging, USD weakness is becoming more widespread. Clients with upcoming dollar exposures may see improved levels, while heightened volatility — particularly in USD/JPY — reinforces the importance of timing and risk management.

Market Overview:

The US dollar has stabilised following Monday’s sharp sell-off, moving sideways as markets adopt a wait-and-see approach ahead of major US events. Despite the pause, the broader tone for the greenback remains cautious, with ongoing speculation around potential yen intervention, renewed trade frictions with Canada, and wider geopolitical uncertainty continuing to weigh on sentiment.

Attention now shifts to key US data, including consumer confidence and ADP employment figures, before tomorrow evening’s Federal Reserve decision. The Fed is widely expected to leave rates unchanged, reinforcing expectations that the easing cycle is on hold for now.

Earnings from major US technology firms — including Meta, Apple, Tesla and Microsoft — will also be closely watched. Any disappointment or signs of US equity underperformance could strengthen the “sell America” theme, which would likely keep the US dollar under pressure.

What this means:

While the dollar has found short-term stability, upcoming data, the Fed decision and big-tech earnings will be pivotal. Volatility could pick up quickly, and USD risks remain skewed to the downside if sentiment towards US assets deteriorates further.
